King of Men picks up within hours of Blood Mother's conclusion. The stakes are higher than ever, as the previous books' ancillary plot elements move to center stage, and, frankly, steal the show. If you've enjoyed the tensions between Shinichiro Keda (my favorite character) and Harold Saldana, you'll especially appreciate this book.There's plenty to be said for Tom and Artie, too, along with brief appearances from Tippler and Rodham. Without giving anything away, Chiyo is a fascinating addition to the cast, and one to keep an eye on.
Wood's writing expertly blends tense urban action sequences, Silent Hill-esque small town dread, and the otherworldly horror of desolate places so ancient they've been forgotten by the modern world. If you combined the X-Files, aforementioned Silent Hill, and Spirited Away, you might get something like this.
And again, without spoilers? Take it from me: this novel has got some kickass LGBT characters.
Start with "Dead Roots" and don't stop reading until you're as desperate for the fourth book as I am.

Like the first reviewer said, the pace is incredibly fast in this one. Yet this doesn't make it any less smart than the previous two novels; the believable, lifelike quality of the characters and the logical conclusion of several plot lines shows an intricate level of detail and understanding. There was no point where I thought "this is stupid" or considered someone's behavior inconsistent or straining credulity. Not spoiling anything here, but the progression of events in "King of Men" left me flabbergasted--yet, in retrospect, the conclusions were probably inevitable and definitely foreshadowed in an expert fashion. You will find great catharsis, tragedy, and insight into the human psyche within these pages. Its literary hooks sunk into my brain right from the start and probably won't let go until I die.
Wood keeps surprising me with how entertaining his writing is. Some may look down on this as a pulp fantasy action book, but Wood certainly has it in him to be the equal of Ian Fleming or Edgar Rice Burroughs. He deserves your attention and your funding, and I look forward to further adventures from Tom and the rest of his loveable group of misfits. Five stars.
The third book in The Analyst series, King of Men is the most fast-paced and action packed. Keda, Tom, and Artie are immediately swept off onto an odyssey of sorts with Keda's barely controlled passenger, the increasingly powerful Aki. Aki has some old enemies in Japan and none of them are too happy to see him back. They must exorcise Aki as quickly as possible before Harold can find them, catch them, and keep Aki (and Aki's power) for himself.
Though Tom is still the main character to whose inner monologue we are privileged, Keda is the main attraction in this volume. He must confront the demons of his past, the parents he left and never saw again since coming out as gay while containing the demon within. For his part, Aki grows as the Byronic hero we never much got to enjoy before. He's the bad guy we want to win, the tortured villain who doesn't seem so bad contrasted with the overly pious and under-nuanced Japanese supernatural authorities. If only his victory wouldn't mean Keda's loss.
King of Men is the book that fans of The Analyst series are waiting to read since we meet Keda in Dead Roots struggling against a powerful demon inside of him while reassuring Tom that Japan's attitude toward the supernatural is to embrace it quite a bit more than Americans. The Japan in King of Men is the Hogwarts to America's muggle world. The supernatural cast of characters is colorful, interesting, and immersive. If it weren't for the meddling of the loathsome villain Harold Saldana, King of Men would almost be more of a fantasy than a horror novel. Unfortunately for poor harassed Tom, he's still a character in one of Brian Wood's books and as such he still has to deal with acid-spewing hunger demons, a giant spider with half of a human hanging off of its stomach, and a sexy ghost with some anger management issues. Oh well, at least he's given up on giving up smoking.
King of Men is simultaneously funnier and darker than the previous books in the series. Keda and Tom are dealing with some heavy stuff, but the gravity in their lives is matched by levity from the fun-loving tea house full of hard partying demons and a ghost who can't use her cell phone.
It's hard to say too much about King of Men without spoiling it. While the villain is obvious this time, the book is no less rich in mystery than its predecessors. In defiance of the typical progression of fiction series which typically get heavier and more outrageous in plot once the characters are established, King of Men is more character-driven. One of the characters' gender is explored with tact and sophistication. Culture, sexuality, and coping with the past take the focus. It's well done. It's funny and horrifying. It's gross and delicious. It's the natural result of the quickly evolving world we've come to love. It's the brain-child of a well-read and talented author.
These characters are beginning to develop. The storyline is fast moving and is easy to follow. Would like to read more.
King of Men changes tone again from Blood Mother. The pace is faster and the tone is fantastical and reminiscent of Neil Gaiman. I really enjoyed the various character arcs and the shift from the previous two novels. Hooked me from the first page and didn't let go til I finished reading it the next day.
I was expecting great things from the third instalment of The Analyst, and I wasn't disappointed. Predictably, the book is even more polished and engaging than its predecessors, and the characters more (and less) human. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Brian does with the series next, or what project he'll be working on if anything else.
This installment fills in a lot of back story for the series and has at least ONE big significant surprise.wow. the author does a wonderful job tying up the story line and bringing a finality to the series. I DO however hope they will be more books in this series, as the characters and overall concept are extremely addicting.
Lovely end to a great series. I read them all in only a few days because I couldn't put them down. I wish there were more!
