"Allie the Allergic Elephant" helps children learn about food allergies and how to be a good friend when you can't share snacks. "Allie" explains peanut allergies in a way that parents, teachers, and chidlren themselves can talk about allergie and understand them better.
Allie the Allergic Elephant A Children Story of Peanut Allergies eBook Nicole Smith Maggie Nichols
The concept and content are helpful, but the illustration is not that appealing. The pages are very simple, no background, no layers; often it's Allie the elephant in slightly different look page by page, same white background (as in cover) so it's almost boring. Plus the lines and shapes are not that nicely done, so it's hard to tell what is what. For example Allie the Elephant with swelled lips - doesn't look vivid and is hard for young children to recognize and relate to. My son kept asking "what is this?" as he couldn't tell. He recognizes objects in his other books much better. I feel this book is not worth the price for that reason. However I guess there are not many books on this concept, so I didn't have much choice when it comes to buying a book to educate my peanut allergic son. He did seem to learn a few things from it, so I'm glad. I agree with reviewers who found the lines a little awkward to follow - like "do you want to see Allie get hives? do you want to see Allie cough? do you want to etc, etc" I feel like there's a better way to tell the story and teach the lessons than asking a bunch of rhetorical questions - children don't get that. So overall I feel this book is quite average when it comes to the story lines and illustration.Product details

Allie the Allergic Elephant A Children Story of Peanut Allergies eBook Nicole Smith Maggie Nichols Reviews
This is a cute book, and I think it gets the point across to a small child, but I did have higher hopes for it, so I was a little disappointed. I will keep looking for a book that better explains the allergy to my child, and how he can be proactive in dealing with it. I think this book is maybe better for a very young child who is first learning about his allergy. My child is 2 but I feel like he needs more than this book offers. Still, I think he'll like it.
When my son turned 3 we decided it was time to start talking to him about his food allergies so he could start understanting what it was and how to deal with them. This book is age appropriate and very cute. Both my 3 and 5 year old look forward to reading this one and I think its very helful in teaching him about his allergies but also not making him feel bad about the fact he can't have certain things, because there are lots of other foods he can have. Positive message and a fun read.

I bought this book in tandem with these allergy bracelets for my 2 yr old who is allergic to peanuts. I especially loved this book because Allie also has a special bracelet. Boys especially don't always want to wear jewelry but the book helped him feel special to wear them. It also helped his older sister understand how important it is not to let him have peanuts. When he's in school I will buy a copy for his class and talk to them about food allergies. Thanks to the author for taking time to bring this subject to light with a fun book that helps kids with allergies feel special and not isolated.
I am an early childhood specialist and the mother of a peanut allergic child. His class was having a hard time understanding his peanut allergy and why he gets different snacks sometimes. I bought this book and a few others for his class to have. I ended up changing the wording of this book before allowing my son's teacher to read it to the class.
1. My child IS normal. The last line in this book is horrible and I can NOT believe any mother would say that!! "Allie just wants to be a NORMAL elephany!. Everyone has things that make them different, his happens to be a food allergy.
2. GUILT is not a way to get his friends to WANT to be near him. We changed it to how can we keep Allie safe? NOT Do you WANT to see Allie get hives??
I will say that I liked that it showed the foods where peanuts can hide and that it showed the different reactions. BUT our book now has correction tape over the words on many pages to change how the story reads so that the other children do not feel GUILT in being near my child and they can HELP him be safe!
As a mother of 2 little girls with severe peanut and tree nut allergies, I thought this book would be perfect to bring to school to help teach her class about food allergies. I have to say that I am surprised that the author, who has a severely allergic son of her own, was so irresponsible in how she wrote this book. The book repeatedly explains how Allie wants to eat peanuts so badly and be like the other elephants who ALL eat peanuts. It says how her friends all feel so bad for her. This isn't the attitude I want to enforce in my girls or their friends. The worst part of the book is that there are pages dedicated to showing the types of reactions Allie can have with funny illustrations with "Oh no... Allie is having hives from the peanuts! Do you want to see Allie get hives?" Only after 5 similar pages of reactions does it say... "Or would you rather see Allie stay healthy and happy?" It's really ridiculous and irresponsible to give children a reason to wonder what reactions look like and if they'd like to watch a friend go through them! Allie is shown refusing peanuts from a friend but only asking if there's peanuts in other foods. Children must be taught to never take food from friends when the suffer severe food allergies, not just ask another 5 year old if there's peanuts! The book even ends with "Allie just wants to be a normal elephant..." Um, my daughters are normal, they just deal with a food allergy. How can a mom of a severely allergic child think this book sends a great message? Wow. I most certainly won't be reading it to my daughter's class! I DO however recommend "Food Allergies and Me" by Juniper Skinner which I ordered at the same time as this book. It truly has all the right lessons and sends the right messages to allergic children and their friends!
The concept and content are helpful, but the illustration is not that appealing.
